We Are Perfect
I recall a family birthday celebration some years ago and as part of the festivities we gathered at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and there we experienced the van Gogh Immersion exhibit. If you have never had this experience and you have the opportunity, don’t miss it!
I did not know what to expect. I thought it would be like any other art exhibit, but I was wrong. When we stepped into this large room and there on one of the walls was a giant display of one of van Gogh’s masterpieces, and it was moving! Fascinated, as we moved further into the room we realized his masterpieces were being displayed on all the walls, and, watch your step!, on the floor and on the ceiling, as well. Each one was moving; Starry Night, Field of Sunflowers, his sketches, all van Gogh’s work. It was truly amazing! We spent an hour and a half immersed in the “immersion” of his masterpieces. What an experience! What a memorable gift!
Van Gogh was hardly a perfect person. He had many flaws in his interaction with others, in his war with himself, and his own declaration that he was a ‘failure’. But he was not a failure, he was, in fact, perfect for the purpose God had for his life. God created this man and this man created masterpieces that we, in turn, admire, are immersed in, and, the result is a spiritual experience.
We, too, are perfect. We have been fashioned out of dust, been made in the perfect image for God’s purpose for our life. Each one of us is different. It goes far beyond fingerprints, gender, race, temperament, intelligence through a long a long list of differences, and yet each one of us is perfect for the purpose for which God has called us.
What is that purpose? Have you discovered yours? In fact, you may be the perfect example of practicing that purpose without actually knowing that this is the purpose for which God has created you. We know about the gifts that God has given us from the reading the Bible, but the mere fact that we are here, where we find ourselves, is part of our purpose.
There is a song by John Legend that contains the phrase “perfect imperfections”. I like that phrase because it seems to apply to all of us. We are made perfect for God’s purpose in our lives, but like van Gogh, we have imperfections, and we need to keep our focus on the purpose for which God has created us. So be it.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You, Lord, to humbly ask for clarity of purpose. Please help me understand the unique path You have laid out for me. Guide my steps and illuminate my heart, so I may walk confidently in the direction You have intended for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
