More Than Enough Part 2

WATCHWORD:

1 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” 3 I say of the holy people who are in the land, “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.” 4 Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips. 5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. Psalm 16:1-5

Meditation:

More than enough Part 2

I’m going to make an assumption that a good number of readers of these devotionals have at some point or another in your lives faced serious medical problems. Maybe you were taken to Urgent Care or Emergency, then admitted to the hospital for further studies and diagnostics. After four or five hours, or days, you were prescribed something and sent home. Then a day or two later, same problem, and you were back at the ER, with greater concern and wondering if the doctors know what they are doing. In truth, what did not resolve your problem, is information leading to a better diagnostic.

Sometime as we pray for guidance, healing, help in various ways we get an answer that does not seem to be the answer we think would work. God‘s answer to our plea is perfect, he responds, he heals in ways we cannot imagine. In truth, the Lord God of our lives is more than enough.

Psalm 16 is David’s prayer for safekeeping, pleading for the Lord’s protection against the threat of death. That is where David placed his trust. David declares his loyalty to God alone. The Lord is David’s one and only good thing; David will have nothing to do with the counterfeit gods upon whom others place their trust.

Calling God his “portion and cup” pictures God as a generous host. Guests at ancient banquets received their portion (of food) and their cup (of drink). David was expressing satisfaction with his lot in life by comparing God to the host of a banquet.

David’s Psalm ends with confidence that reaches past the grave,  strongly affirming security in the Lord, which extends even beyond death.

Can you echo David’s words, declaring that God is your one and only good thing, your security into the future and beyond? I pray so, for you and for me.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, please hear us, receive us. Respond to us when we choose to run to you when faced with difficulties, the storms that often come in the give-and-take of our lives. We come to you because we have courage and knowing that you are our God and that your response is perfect And will be the ultimate outcome of every situation every problem, every threat or disaster in our lives. You are our strength, Lord, keep us safe for we know that you are able, and that your plan, your path is more than enough. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
