Almost There?

WATCHWORD

1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. 6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.  Romans 5:1-8

Meditation:

Almost There?

Thanksgiving is just barely on the horizon, yet the “Season” is creeping in, Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go…

We’re all excited because visiting grandpa and grandma was the highest spot of travel we did as/with kids. Ever keep track of all the times you heard the cry from the back seat, ‘Are we almost there, daddy, are we almost there?’ and most of the time we weren’t ‘almost there’ but we were getting closer.

Maybe in years past you’re the one making that call from the backseat, wondering how much longer it will be till we get where we want to be. Well, here we are, today, all of us are in the backseat, we are all calling out ‘how much longer…will we be dealing with variants, with Flu shots, RSV, COVID? Are we getting closer?

We are all anxious to get back to our past normal, in the back of our minds I think we are all hoping that this new version of our normal is going to be better than the old version of our normal. We’ve had quite a stretch, and we have learned a lot from these past years and months. But we want this ‘class’ to be over, we want to take what we have learned, and maybe apply it so as we go beyond the variants, the need for still another booster shot. Are we better people, stronger people, people whose time with the Lord is stronger for this testing we’ve gone through?

It calls to mind the question I wrote in an earlier Watchword: What could I say to you that would bring you comfort, that would encourage you, that would strengthen you as you go through your dark time? That is still an appropriate question, but it’s the answer that we need to follow.

What is better than an encouraging word? Our presence in their lives. True, but maybe that is not an option. So, the next best thing, is letting them know that you are there and thinking of them. You know, the “Just touching base” telephone call, a text message or an email goes a long way toward encouragement.

Are we almost there? Getting much closer, so let’s put the past in the past, and prepare ourselves for the Advent of the Lord. It is more than a date or a season, friends, celebrate and praise the Lord now for health, for science, for the very lives we have been given. See the Light? That’s the Light of His word, that’s the Light of His presence.  Amen.

Closing Prayer:

Let Your goodness, Lord, appear to us, that we, made in your image, conform ourselves to it. In our own strength, we cannot imitate Your majesty, power, and wonder nor is it fitting for us to try. But Your mercy reaches from the heavens through the clouds to the earth below. You come to us as a small child, but you have brought us the greatest of all gifts, the gift of eternal love. Caress us with Your tiny hands, embrace us with Your tiny arms and pierce our hearts with Your soft, sweet cries.”  Amen.  –St. Bernard of Clairvaux
