My dad was a preacher for nearly 60 years and when he died I became the holder of all his files, his sermons, his notes, etc., box after full box. Some of the material was just background stuff, little snippets here and there, often unrelated, some were just items he collected because he thought each was interesting.
Recently I came across the following “Lesson”. I have no idea where this came from, who might have written it (assuming dad did not), or when. The only date on this yellowed piece of paper is nearly 40 years ago. If you are currently a teacher trying to keep up with the constant changes that seem to be handed down by administrators who may never have been in the classroom, you can relate. I present it here because it has humor and truth. You can figure out which is which.
The Lesson
Then Jesus took his disciples up the mountain and gathering them around Him, He taught them saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are the meek, blessed are they that mourn, blessed are the merciful, blessed are they who thirst for justice, blessed are you when persecuted, blessed are you when you suffer be glad and rejoice for your reward is great in Heaven.
(Matthew 5:3-12)
Simon Peter said: Do we have to write this down?
Andrew said: Are we supposed to know this?
James said: Will we have a test on it?
Phillip said: What if we don’t know it?
Bartholomew said: Do we have to turn this in?
John said: The other disciples didn’t have to learn this!
Matthew said: When do we get out of here?
Judas said: What does this have to do with real life?
Then one of the Pharisees who was present asked to see Jesus’ lesson plan, and he inquired of Jesus as to His terminal objectives in the cognitive domain.
And Jesus wept! John 11:35
For What It’s Worth.
