Watchwords

Talk to God?

WATCHWORD:

I have refused to walk on any evil path, so that I may remain obedient to your word.  I haven’t turned away from your regulations, for you have taught me well. How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey. Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:101-105

Meditation:

Talk to God?

Do you talk to God?  I’m not talking about a conversation we may have in the context of our prayers, so much, but the simple sharing with our Lord what’s happening with you, at any given moment.  Every moment of our lives is part of that sharing with God.  Have you ever thought about the fact that the wind carries thousands of seeds, and each seed brings with it a certain degree of, I don’t know, maybe the potential for spiritual vitality. Most of these seeds carried by the air simply perish because they don’t find a place to take root – but some do.

You’re familiar with Christ’s parable of the sower, what he tells us is that the seed is the word of God. I think too often we think this applies only to the gospel preached in churches, maybe only on Sundays. But every expression of the will of God is in some sense the word of God, therefore, capable of new life. New life in us, think of that.

In the midst of our everyday life, what we share with others by word and by deed can be a representative of the word of God.  Every Wednesday morning as a group of men gather to study the word of God, in conversation and then sharing the presence of God in our lives. When we tell of experiences within our lives and how God has moved, we are planting seeds with the others in that room and feel the sense of God’s presence. That’s a powerful experience and each time I hear one of my friends speak of how important it is that we gather, I’m lifted up and I feel a kind reverence, clothed in gratitude to the Lord.

You know we must learn to realize that the love of God seeks us in every situation and seeks our good. I just recently completed a short book which I entitled Awakenings. The story tells of four people who, because of the experience of two of them, had the real presence of God being opened up in their lives, life-changing new ways.  This is a book that I struggled with for over three years, often thinking it was complete, only to have the Lord lead me back to revision after revision. Seeds, even in Christian fiction.

We must realize that God speaks to us more often than we speak to him. The Holy Spirit that dwells within does far more than we know or are aware of, during the course of our days. That Holy Spirit leads us to action, it plants thoughts and words, and grants us the awareness that God loves us and is present with us.

As I finish this devotional, I am listening to Amy Grant singing one of my favorite songs, “Thy Word is a Lamp Unto My Feet”, Psalm 119:105. God shining His light upon the path of our life journey. Amen.

A Witness in the Lyrics:

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet
And a light unto my path.
When I feel afraid,
And think I’ve lost my way.
Still, You’re there right beside me.
Nothing will I fear
As long as You are near;
Please be near me to the end.

I will not forget
Your love for me and yet,
My heart forever is wandering.
Jesus be my guide,
And hold me to Your side,
And I will love you to the end.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet
And a light unto my path.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help us to humble ourselves under Your mighty and loving hand, that You would lift us up in good time. Help us to cast our anxieties on You because we know that You love and care for us. You are the light of the world and Your light, Lord, is my light and salvation so why should I be afraid? I know Heavenly Father that Your word is life and Your word is light that illuminates the path of my life, the path that You have laid out for me. So it is with great gratitude Father that we offer our prayers in the name of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen.
