Look! Appreciate! Know!

WATCHWORD:

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? Psalm 8:3-4

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship. Day and night they keep on telling about God. 3-4 Without a sound or word, silent in the skies, their message reaches out to all the world. The sun lives in the heavens where God placed it and moves out across the skies as radiant as a bridegroom going to his wedding,* or as joyous as an athlete looking forward to a race! The sun crosses the heavens from end to end, and nothing can hide from its heat. Psalm 19:1-6

Meditation:

Look! Appreciate! Know!

Several months ago, an Oswald Chambers’ devotional started with this: “We have all experienced times of exaltation on the mountain, when we have seen things from God’s perspective and have wanted to stay there.”

I know that we all have those moments that we treasure, remembrances we call to mind and find that sense of amazement is still fresh. Maybe it was a sunset, or a special event in your life, an unexpected grace that just astounded you.

I had such a moment recently, standing in a church holding my 3-month old great-grandson for the first time at his baptism. That experience carried the same power as a Lake Michigan sunset or a vast field of tulips in an Arkansas garden. It was more than an “Oh! moment”, yes it was a God Moment and it was something deeper, more visceral.

Why is that?  I believe it is the Glory of God being revealed to us and through all of creation. Not to cheapen the idea, but it is like God calling out to us, saying: Look!  Look at this baby. See what I have created! Appreciate the gifts! And know that I am God!

In a very real sense the Almighty is allowing us to see his creation anew, and to recognize his fingerprints in all of it. It causes us to pray that God would give us the eyes to really see the work of his hands, to really hear the sound of creation all around us, to know in the depths of our heart the Glory of God shown in our world. That overwhelming sense of awe that we experience is like an unspoken prayer to the Lord to draw us closer, to allow us to worship You, personally. Amen.

Closing Prayer:

Precious Father, thank You for allowing us to benefit from the beauty of all that Your hand has created. Thank You for our seas, forests, and skies. Thank You for all the beautiful and fragrant plants, and for the power and wonder of every animal. Thank You for the seasons and the rains that keep our earth reproducing. Thank You for those moments when we glimpse Your glory. Amen
